And faster than other summers. Theories anyone? We were that tired from 2016-2017 that we just needed a few extra weeks/months of vacation?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Well, things in my life are zip-zappin' and bee-boppin' all over the place, but I did spend a significant portion of my summer at school. The good news was that I was doing something I love... painting! I am so fortunate to have administrators who are of the mindset that "color is better". I come to them with an idea and they're like "Mini, make it happen." So I do.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It all started with the nurses' office, who had a personal request for an office sprucing, after seeing my music hallway. From there it progressed to the library, and then we even added on some stained glass windows! I think the kids will be excited when they return next week.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

In fact, life in general is just better with color, especially when you work in a building with lots of young learners. So I was six months into my first year of teaching and the hallway down to my room was driving me CRRRR-AZY. It was long (it still is) and very bland (which now it is not).

The entirety of this project took a week to complete, with some amazing help from my administrator (over Christmas break, 2015-2016). We re-coated the whole wall white, I came in a sketched, and then we tag-teamed the painting from a sketch I had submitted to her. Now, the kids are all jazzed up for music. The quote reads, "music is the language everyone speaks", which I thought was appropriate for my school since so many students are bilingual.
The hanging music notes were a 2016-2017 addition, which make the hallway even more colorful. I asked each grade level one questions about music (what is your favorite song, how music makes you feel, etc.) I recorded each students response on a separate music note and strung them up.
It's definitely a part of music, but to call it "form" seems so...formal, don't you think? Only being in my second year, I am still trying to figure out what different grade levels are capable of handling. I was pleasantly surprised that my first graders were able to grasp the concept of form so quickly. More to my surprise was their enthusiasm about hearing different patterns.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">My beginning form lesson with first grade involves teaching them one of my personal favorite songs from Music K-8, "Presto, Largo". I have the kids act out what each animal is doing on the screen--and they love crawling on the ground like the bunny. What works really well about this song is that it has two distinct sections, the presto section (A) and largo section (B). They very quickly understand that our song is ABABA form. Boom! Let's kick it up a notch.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Introducing, the finale from the William Tell Overture. Okay, it's kicked up a whole lot of notches, and even though the kids are overwhelmed at first, when assisting them in breaking it down, they realize the song is more manageable than they think (especially when you add really goofy choreography to the different sections). Then, as I saw multiple examples on Youtube, I was able to add in rhythm sticks to the choreography, of which the kids loved. Here is one of my first grade classes (and life-skills kids included!) taking a crack at the William Tell Overture Finale.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Let's talk about a surprise of the century.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">My fourth grade students have never been more engaged in anything! They are eating up this unit on Black History Month songs, fighting and begging to sing solos and asking if they can take the booklets home.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I am fortunate, my school has a decent collection of the Music K-8 songs and magazines so I spent some valuable time with their song index, compiling all the Black History Month songs that I had available to me. These songs included:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Get On Board (Vol 17 No 3)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yonder Come Day (Vol 25 No 3)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Michael Row The Boat Ashore (Vol 15 No 5)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Down By The Riverside (Vol 15 No 3)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Go Down Moses (Vol 22 No 3)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This Little Light Of Mine (Vol 8 No 3)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">For each song, I did a little research and printed up some song histories which I included in the front of each booklet. Before we learn a new song, we spend time reading about it and discussing it as a class. Teaching these six songs took about 4 50-minute classes, of which we would go back and review older songs before learning new ones (and letting different people try the solos). There were some other things that I included as well. With Yonder Come Day, we talked about the Gullah Sea Islands, and showed this documentary clip on Gullah Culture. This Prezi presentation gave us a nice lead-in into that. After we worked our way through Down By The Riverside, I ended class with this clip, as to how this song has made its way around the world [they thought it was the coolest thing].

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A fun way to end the unit was talking about gospel choirs, how they are often only SAT instead of SATB, and the use of expression and repetition in gospel songs/gospel choirs. I used this clip for Go Down Moses, and this one for This Little Light Of Mine, which a lot of my students could relate to (as they are familiar with America's Got Talent).

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">As a teacher, I've learned to never underestimate the power of singing, and how sometimes just simply singing can be "enough." It is rich with history, and things to discuss, and the students have things to share. This will most definately be a unit to repeat next year!
Let's keep the realness going, sometimes you have an idea for a lesson plan, the realize it isn't going to work 5 minutes before the class starts. This is where some of the best improvising happens, and some awesome creativity. Well, thats exactly what happened with a kindergarten lesson this year and let me tell you, it will definitely be a lesson I'll be using for years to come!!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The lesson took a total of 20 minutes. I briefly discussed the concept of a "conductor" with the class and had them demonstrate with their voices following me, their conductor. I'd make them get louder, softer, do weird cut-offs and get them giggling (and paying attention!) I took time to review the following instruments with my students: tambourine, jingle bells, hand drums, woodblock. For each instrument we discussed the correct and incorrect ways to play and laid down the very specific rules of caring for my instruments. I then played The Trepak Dance from The Nutcracker Ballet and demonstrated playing all four instruments.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I then divided each group of instruments to four different corners and stayed put in the middle of the room as the conductor. The key was all ending at the same time. Then, once we all gently placed the instruments down each group would rotate throughout the room to a different instrument. Oh what joy and what fun the kids had, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself as well!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sorry fellow teachers--I did not have time to score out all 4 parts, so I thought it would be much easier to demonstrate them all for you. I'm sure you can catch the drift :)
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

I was in my second week of teaching and about to lose my mind with these first graders. They were running and screaming and playing tag when they were supposed to be doing the hokey pokey and I was at my wits end. College did not prepare me for this.

"Sit down now or this class is not getting a star!"

Well, it caught their attention. They didn't know what a star was, or what it meant. Nor did their teacher, but I had captivated their attention for a whole second and I wasn't going to let it go to waste. "That's right!" I said "you're going to want to collect those stars for a popcorn and movie party." Improv at it's finest, ladies and gentlemen. Little did I know that those stars would come to be the very foundation of my music classroom management.

Here we are in year number 2, and the star system is still in full swing. Here is how it works. Each music class recieves a star, every day. Green stars are top stars, then yellow, then red. Since I see each class once a cycle, it shakes out to about one star a week. The goal for the classes is to collect 5 green stars. Once they do, they earn a popcorn and movie party for the class. Now, it's not any old movie, silly. We watch a musical! The breakdown is currently:

Kindergarten: Tarzan/Cinderella [Disney Movies are so short!]

1st Grade: Annie (from the 80's)

2nd Grade: Mary Poppins

3rd Grade: Pete's Dragon

4th Grade: The Wiz

What's beautiful for me is that the majority of my kids have never seen the movie that their grade level watches. They really get into them and I get to see the magic of musicals take over them. Because of they way the classes shake out, it takes about 3 classes to finish the movie, and then for the last "movie/popcorn party" we spend time comparing contrasting various youtube versions of the stage performances, and take time to learn one of the songs from the show. In a way, its really neat for me because I still get to do a "musical theatre unit" with each grade, but it gets spaced out throughout the year.

So how do the stars happen? Well this year I contrived a nifty little scale as to where our star is sitting so it's right out there in the open. The kids leave class, knowing what color star they got that day. If the class is chatty and I ask "I'm ready, are you?" and the chattiness continues, I simply move the star down one letter. Sometimes, if Im nice and the kids are quiet before I get to the board, I let it go. They have gotten really good at holding each other accountable for when the star goes up or down. Oh! Thats another part; the star can move both up and down. Some classes come in straight from lunch or recess and they can quickly knock down their star. When I sense that they're settling in and start working together, I bump their star back up for various things, like keeping their bodies under control.

Of course, this is certainly not the most perfect classroom management system, there are always going to be insividual students who do not earn the party, but for the vast majority of students this is a great motivational tool to get us through what we need to learn. It's easy, fun, and tangible!

I was recently blown away at the level of excitement that stars can bring to classes outside of music. Co-workers tell me it has become a part of morning meeting routine to talk about how many stars they have in music class.

Oh first grade. So much energy, and very little capacity to read. That leaves me in quite a conundrum. How do I survive the very primary grades? Playlists.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">There is a lot of singing that takes place in the younger classes. We have routines with interchangeable songs for our playlists. They usually run us 15 minutes or so, and are a great way for me to get all of the kids having a familiar background with some basics (like Mister Sun, Shoo Fly Don't Bother Me, and other kinds of nursery rhymes). However, another concept that us music teachers try to drill down at the younger grades is that of steady beat. I found a fabulous way to do this with my first graders and it has been on our playlist for 2 full months. Using Leroy Andersons "The Syncopated Clock", I created a dance that helps us keep the steady beat on different parts of our bodies, and to put some bigger movements together, while still counting the beat.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The video below is from the first day the students learned the dance in September. Needless to say (now 2 months later) they do all the counting themselves, and only receive a few cues from me. My classroom is full of cheers when the music comes on. Try it out in your classes and see if it is a hit!
This years third graders are super ready, responsible, and respectful, and love to sing. Although I've been capitalizing on that as much as I can in the classroom, we have also been conquering the staff. We have been practicing learning our treble clef notes, lines and spaces. Some crazy line-sayings [EGBDF} we have include:

"Every Giraffe Buys Dragon Feet"

"Every Gorilla Bangs Dirty Fur"

"Every Goat Buys Doughnuts Fast"

This past week we have started talking about musical intervals (doing some aural training) and applying our note reading to actual music instruments. I was fortunate to inherit these xylophones that were left in a classroom closet for me. They have proved incredibly useful in my music classroom. They require a lot of structure and specific directions, however they provide endless opportunities for learning and LOTS of smiles and teamwork.

Here are some snapshots of the very beginnings of our 3rd graders reading music. I took the various leveled songs for Recorder Karate and have them work in pairs to play the songs on the xylophone. One person is the player, and the other is the music guider (who has to have special powers of reading music upside-down so they can guide their partner in where they are). So proud of these kids for working so hard and playing in their first "xylophone ensemble."

I thought for sure that I loved them last year because we had a fabulous group of kids, but it turns out that I really love this years 2nd graders as well. It must be the age. Some magical maturity happens, you can begin to trust them just a bit more, and well, at least musically, there is A LOT that happens in 2nd grade!

One of the things that has kept me sane as a music teacher has been the discovery of our schools subscription of Music K-8. No, this is not a promotional blog post, this is me just stating that those songs have saved my life way too many times! Fortunately, they also produce a lot of songs that not only span across curriculum, but they also help teach music concepts too---like solfege!

My 2nd graders are preparing to perform the "Wacky Do-Re-Mi's" at the fall concert next week. It was a great opportunity to teach them many opportunities like

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">-Solfege hand signs

-Following along with a lead sheet

-High and low pitches and flipping from chest voice to head voice

It also was a great way for me to introduce them to some of the instruments they'll be using lots of this year, like the boomwhackers! Here are some of my 2nd grade classes as we played along with the Wacky Do-Re-Mi's. The youtube video can be found here (of course, they loved imitating the dancing mouse the best!)
My first year of teaching was such a blur I can't remember if we even had one last year--because if we did I certainly didn't stay. Oopsies! But thankfully this year I was prepared!

Our kids received a passport when they attended open house and they had to visit 5 different places throughout the school in order to get a ticket for the raffle. The prize? A new bike! One of the stops? Of course, the music room.
Similar to the "musical petting zoo" that so many have posted, I followed suite and the kids enjoyed playing (and ohhhh did they play...my ears were ringing in the hours afterward). I also had the kindergarden and 1st grade playlist on in the background; so many students loved performing our classroom dances for their parents!
What other things have you done for open house?
This week, we're doing just that. I wanted to share with you what my 2nd graders are currently up to. We've been practicing our ta's, ti-ti's and rests and this week they get to do their own composing! I've seen this idea floating around Pinterest in various forms, but the specific idea for caterpillars came from Mrs. King's rockin' blog.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So, first things first, I spent some time making my new caterpillar friends. Fortunately, our art teacher had some unused wooden dowels and just gave them to me! Then I invested in some styrofoam balls, googly eyes and a cute fluffy nose. I wedged the styrofoam balls on and hot glued them in place, and before I knew it I had me a whole posse of caterpillar friends.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Then there was the pool noodles. Each piece is approximately 4 inches long (because lets be real, folks...measuring all those got real old, real quick) and I cut enough to fill up a bin for storage.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I left the composing part up to chance. This is the board I presented to my 2nd graders.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here's the reality: this activity can get really chaotic really fast. First and foremost I emphasized the fact that these were my caterpillar friends and I didn't want to take any of them to the hospital. Oh my word, did the kids ever respond to that--they took such good care of my materials! As far as the composing, I broke it down for my students by simply roll playing and putting together a whole caterpillar before I set them off on their own. I was the caterpillar holder, I had another student be the "roller", and another be the "runner" (who did not actually run). My job was to hold/place on the parts, the roller is to roll the dice, and the runner is to get the new part that we need. With each addition to the caterpillar we stopped and read it. In the beginning it was simple, ti-ti. Then, as the caterpillar grew, our rhythms got longer too. I made each group perform for me before they could start again--because everyone wanted to switch jobs.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This activity was definitely a hit, and it will come back around when centers happen a little bit later. What are some of your favorite activities to do with 2nd grade?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8901620480017106722.post-20736137521831043662016-09-07T16:41:00.003-07:002016-09-07T16:41:35.893-07:00Staff Match<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We may be entering the 3rd week of school, but this is still serious review time for students. Last year, I had this brilliant idea to teach my students something super important at the end of the year:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">reading the staff.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I know, what was I thinking, right? Turns out once your students know how to read the staff and rhythms there are a bazillion more activities and songs/instruments you can do with them. No worries, ya'll, I am hoppin' on that train a lot earlier this year. In the meantime, my current 4th grade is in need of some review of how to read the staff, so behold, I give you this weeks game: Staff Match. Now, I've seen things similar to this around several other blogs, matching instruments to pictures, or parts of English, or numbers or whatnot. For 4th grade though, I've decided to spice it up a notch, incorporating an additional math component.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Step one: Create twelve Staff Match Discs (or six sets printed twice--click here)
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">(Also, our copier copied them funny so I have a funky line on all of them---oh well) I printed them each on card stock and then ran them through the laminator. I also wrote "Set 1, Set 2, etc" on the back so that the kids can switch for different rounds.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Step three: Set up the game in classroom. Have clothespins available for students to grab (for extra challenge, don't put them in alphabetical order). Set up a number key as well, as seen below. The students will have two dice. They must add the dice together to get a specific number before they can come up and grab the clothespin they need. For example, if the students need a "G" (G=4) they must roll a 3+1 or a 2+2.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Step five: Say "GO!" and let the chaos begin. The pair that rolls and matches all 8 on their disc first is the winner

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Step six: Have students shuffle discs and get ready for round two (because they will want to play again and again)!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This game was immediately loved by my 4th graders as one of their new favorites. Working in partners also played in my favor because we obtained some new students in 4th grade who didn't know the staff. They were still able to participate in the game without being completely lost. Try it in your classroom and let me know how it goes :)

This is where the magic happens. For my students, when they think back to elementary music, this will be the setting they always envision. For me, this is where I spend most waking hours of my day, August through May, so it's got to be appealing for my sanity's sake. That means COLOR! As exclaimed by a student of mine upon entering:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">"It's like a party in here"

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">and the truth is, that's exactly the experience I want students to have in music class [but let's be honest, it's not a reality].
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Below if a brief visual tour of my classroom--I'll get around to more specifics/my structures and routines in future posts, but for now this is the quick view!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Ya'll these sticks are magical. On the top of every chair I painted a number 1-24. Each student has a music number. My magical stick jar is a great way to choose helpers, do random assessments, and make quick groups for games or centers. Plus, it adds some elements of suspense for the kids.

It's happening. I am blogging about something I am incredibly passionate about: TEACHING!

I'm not an expert, or a magical wizard that has all the answers, but I'm a creative leader who is devoted to loving and teaching her students well. The name is Miss Mini, but some of my beloved life-skills students refer to me as Miss "Mickey". I teach music, have a choir, and perform the daily lunch duty. I've put together assemblies, concerts, field trips, and yes--even a rap video (more on that later). Technically I'm a 2nd year teacher, but I've taught abroad, and my first year as a music teacher aged me about 7 years, so does that count?

I know there are music educators out there that would have my head for saying this, but more than anything I am passionate about urban education. I teach in an urban K-4 building, serving approximately 500 students. My music class is not always about the greatest composers, or correctly identifying every single instrument (although, we're getting there). It's about using music as a creative outlet, giving my students options for when they need to "escape" besides youtube or Xbox---finding friends and playing a musical game, or having songs from my class keep them company at night when they can't fall asleep.

I'm excited to start blogging, to get some of my ideas out there and to collaborate with fellow music educators---all educators! I'm excited to celebrate successes and troubleshoot troubles. I hope you'll enjoy the peeks into my classroom and hopefully get a small taste of the love that is all around. As I often say to the classes before entering my room:
"Let's get this party started!"
